The Eastern Bay Energy Trust (EBET) Taster Course
This Electricity Supply Taster Course is held during the first week of September/October school holidays and is an opportunity for year 12 and 13 students to take part in a variety of industry-related and team-building/personal development activities.
Applicants for this course must:
- Be a year 12 or year 13 student and live in the Whakatane, Kawerau or Opotiki District Council area, or Kaingaroa Village;
- Be aged at least 16 years at the start of the course;
Have completed minimum of NCEA Level 1 and have good literacy and numeracy skills, and an interest in science and technology.
Have an interest in careers in the electricity supply industry.
- Have a strong work ethic (demonstrated either at school or in employment).

The National Certificate in Electricity Supply Level 2 is a full-time course designed specifically for the electricity supply industry. It is the initial trade qualification that leads to other level 4 New Zealand Electricity Supply Certificates, and is a great way to prepare for apprenticeships in the industry. All pre-trade courses include opportunities for work experience.
Pre-trade course is held in Christchurch at the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology
The pre-trade course covers workshop practices, electrical knowledge, safe working practices, mechanical fundamentals and specific electricity supply industry skills. The courses also provide students with marketable skills to help them gain apprenticeships in the electricity supply industry.
University and Polytechnic Study Completing a university degree or Polytechnic degree or diploma will allow you to apply for a variety of technical jobs within the electricity supply industry.
Bachelor of Engineering
These four or five year programmes from universities will enable you to embark on a wide range of careers. These careers include design, consulting, project management, management, commissioning as a technician, product development and research in the area of power engineering.
Bachelor of Engineering Technology
The BEngTech is a three-year degree fulltime programme provided by the Polytechnic tertiary sector for people wishing to become engineering technologists in the power industry. The degree is more practically orientated than the offered degree offered by the universities’.
The New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (NZDE) is a two-year fulltime programme provided by the Polytechnic tertiary sector for people wishing to become engineering technicians in the power industry. It has a specialisation in power engineering. This qualification also has stair casing into the BEngTech qualification. The academic NZDE is linked to the on job practical New Zealand Diploma in Engineering Practice, NZDEP.
