Attendance Information

Girls with Hi-Vis events and their co-hosts cover a wide range of industries and roles allowing every event to be unique.

The event agendas are made available to provide you with more information on the event, including planned activities, locations, and clothing requirements.

While the clothing and PPE requirements vary based on the event, we ask that students wear closed-toe shoes (no Crocs or other sandal types), long sleeves, and long pants to all events.

Northern region

Auckland (Mangere)

A super interactive, fun event where the students can try out all sorts of different roles related to our business. Operating a digger, Installing a water meter, confined spaces and heights training in a real-life pipe simulation, traffic management.

Participants will be divided into two groups, with each group engaging in distinct activities before swapping roles to ensure a comprehensive exposure to the project. Beams Game: An interactive session on-site, designed to provide hands-on experience with structural elements of construction. Site Visit and Ecological Insight: A guided tour along the completed sections of the boardwalk. Project Manager Amy will lead this tour, focusing on the ecological aspects of the job and the surrounding area of Te Whau River. Guest Speaker: A session with a distinguished guest speaker, offering valuable insights into the construction industry and ecological considerations in project management.

Come and join the John Fillmore Contracting (JFC) team, at our Transport Yard based out in Mangere Bridge. Our Transport Yard is the home of JFC’s large trucks, mobile plant, and small tools. All lead by the JFC Transport General Manager and her team that manage the distribution and allocation of all Truck Drivers, all vehicles and all equipment across the various JFC sites. You will hear journeys of our wāhine leaders, who project manage, engineer, construct and oversee the many projects that are currently underway. Giving insight into their roles, pathways and how they contribute to the success of our sites. Tauranga

A thorough introduction to career pathways and opportunities for young women. A good selection of speakers from a variety of backgrounds such as hiring managers, cadets and grads and covering both field and office staff. Site visits with opportunity to observe and interact with site activities. Debrief and celebrate successes/observations of the day. 3 groups of 10 students for rotations. 


Tokaanu

Our day will begin with us all meeting together at Moawhango Dam and then heading off on a bus to visit key areas of the Tongariro Scheme, such as Rangipō Power Station where we will eat morning tea together. We will then travel to Tokaanu Power Station, where we’ll have lunch together. Rangatahi will hear from some inspiring women in operational roles on our career panel and get involved in some hands-on activities such as wiring an extension cord and building a mini earth dam, facilitated by Genesis wāhine. After a tour of the Tokaanu Power Station, we'll close our day with reflections and thanks then students will head back to school.


Tauranga

This event encompasses all the HEB construction sites that are currently underway on the strand Tauranga. Starting at the Cargo shed, we will be walking to the Beacon Wharf Project, then the Seawall and northern park redevelopment and then further down to the TCC walkway, a walkway on piles over the water. Visit approximately 2km walk so a reasonable level of fitness required.


Whakatane

EWP Operation and pole top rescue – A chance to operate and go up in a truck mounted EWP and carry out a pole top rescue, climbing a ladder and rescuing a dummy, part of this experience will be learning about the PPE required and checks needed prior to working. (Note: this is an outdoor activity. High Voltage Cable Jointing 101 – Experience the world of high voltage cable jointing. Using a heat shrinking methods to terminate cable. Each stage of preparation will be on display, with hands on exposure using tools and equipment for the job. Control Room Experience – A tour of the Horizon Networks Control room at Commerce Street and the opportunity to see the SCADA system and how the Network is managed remotely from the operations centre.


Hamilton

A strong focus on driver education/traffic management education/travelling through managed sites/what good looks like/how poor driver judgement can impact everything & everyone. How to be a mindful, safer member of the public. How to keep yourself safe travelling through traffic managed sites. Risks, unfamiliarity with managed environment & driver confusion. Mitigating those risks – building confidence as young drivers/what to look for/best practice behavior for safety as a driver.

We are constructing a new waste water treatment plant that will process Wellingtons ‘sludge’ and turn it in to a dry pellet product that can be used for forestry (for example) instead of currently where it is sent to landfill. This is part of the councils sustainability goals. We would present to the girls on the construction project and the function of the completed plant itself. Then split into groups for activities; site tour, go in crane or excavator, bridge building activity (desktop) Presentations from – Keisha – apprentice, Chloe – Project Engineer, Keeley – Quantity Surveyor Cadet

We will have 3 activities. EWP/Crane/Working at heights, observation only. Rig up an insulator to bind wire in and set up a cross arm (at ground level). These activities will be a snippet into a day in the life of our field workers and the various fields we have, including Line Mechanic, Faultman and an Electrician. The activities will take part in various areas of the depot.
